Functional Connections: 15 Characteristics of a Healthy, Intimate Relationship

Humans are motivated to satisfy a hierarchy of functional needs, ultimately achieving a level self-actualization. According to Abraham Maslow, the five levels of  needs play a focal role in motivating behavior and are similar to human instincts. The third level of needs is interpersonal and involve an individual's sense of belonging. Aside from platonic and family relationships , humans strive to form and maintain intimate connections as well. Provided here are essential elements for an optimal, sexual companionship:

1) Reciprocity
The ability to give and receive love freely is the first component for constructing a healthy relationship. In order to do so, individuals must first form a positive relationship within their self.

2) Respect
Mutual respect between partners is described as non- judgmental listening; being emotionally affirming, sympathetic and  understanding; valuing each other's opinions.

3) Honesty and Trust
Open and truthful communication is vital for any stable relationship. It is important for individuals to believe their partner's word and confer the benefit of the doubt.

4) Cooperation and Accountability
Successful relationships are formed by individuals who seek mutually satisfying resolutions to conflict and are willing to compromise. It is important to request action versus expect behavior and to accept what exists rather than implement change. Individuals should assume their responsibilities, behaviors and attitudes; They should accept their mistakes and admit when they are wrong.

5) Safety and Support
Those involved in an intimate relationship should support their partner's choices, offer encouragement, and provide the necessary assistance to promote the well-being of their significant other. Refusing to manipulate, intimidate or violate boundaries outline the conduct of all interactions and associations. The initial attraction between two people provokes their physical and emotional intimacy for each other, but its the presence of mutual protection and heartened assurance that provokes a long-lasting relationship.
